PermianShone down the sun on permian plains
On the delta like a spoke on a wheel
The amphibian's crown to the reptile's sons
And they both felt cheated after closing the deal
A flat headed salamander deep in the swamp
Watch how wet hide, it shivers and steams
While sailbacks snarl with broken teeth
On the cold desert hills sloping down to the sea.
Shone down the sun on permian dunes
Where gorgons profit from the sailback's mistake
While cycads burn under freezing hail
And forests crumble into sand and fade
And the white fanged wolves all covered in scales
Tramping over rock and dead dusty ground
Above little diggers, furtive and small,
Dug down so deep they'll never be found.
Said black robed death when it covered the sun
"I've seen dynasties come to their end"
While the earth choked sick on a spaceborne meal
And ash settled over deserts again.
With the cold blood heart that no longer beats
for an era baking for want of the sun
So life cowers down in it's dusty den
Cowering while death flies
